Glenveagh estate, built by Adair in 1857, later became Ireland's National Park

Glenveagh National Park in County Donegal has its origins in a vast private estate created in the 19th century. According to the National Parks of Ireland, John George Adair established the Glenveagh Estate in 1857 after purchasing the chief rent of Derryveagh and Glendowan and buying out the interests of the major tenants. More than a century later, the estate changed hands when the Irish state purchased it from Henry McIlhenny in 1975. The acquisition formed part of plans to establish a national park in the mountainous area of northwestern Donegal. Today, the estate forms the historic heart of Glenveagh National Park, known for its rugged landscapes and lakes.
