Glentoran determined to keep their focus insists Bobby Burns

It is the old cliche of one game at a time for Glentoran as Bobby Burns insists they will not be getting carried away just yet.

The Glens moved to the top of the Danske Bank Premiership following their 4-0 demolition of nearest challengers Larne on Friday night.

It was a real signal of intent as Mick McDermott's men flexed their muscles.

Burns though is adamant that after being stung in recent seasons they will not look too far ahead of themselves with Tuesday night's BetMcLean League Cup quarter-final away at Loughgall their sole focus.

"It doesn't mean much at this stage of the season," said the former Hearts man.

"We were in strong positions last year so we're not taking anything for granted.

"Although we're winning some of the games well and we're getting clean sheets, which is nice, but we are just going to focus on one game at a time.

"Tuesday night is our next big game in the League Cup against Loughgall.

"We have to refocus because in the cup matches it could be one game then you're out.

"We want to try and compete in all the competitions we can, and I feel we have a big enough squad to do that.

"So as I say we'll refocus and see how it goes on Tuesday night."

One of the key factors in Glentoran's success this season has been their defensive solidity.

To date they have only conceded two goals - on in the league to Crusaders and the other in the County Antrim Shield against Ards.

Burns said there is a real desire throughout the squad not to concede every time they go out to play.

"It's funny we've just sort of taken it one game at a time and gradually every game we've picked up another clean sheet, but we've had a few close scares," he said.

"The addition of Aidan Wilson has been very good for us, especially aerially, and we have tightened up from set pieces, which is an area we have tried to improve on.

"I think as a whole team, even the front men leading the press up top, and Shay McCartan's defensive work against Larne was exceptional.

"So it's not just the defensive players who are getting the credit, the whole team has worked hard for this and really tried to pick up the clean sheets.

"We have a good squad, there's five or six on the bench who would start at most Premiership clubs.

"The big thing for us is even if we get injuries we might be depleted but we're not weakened.

"If you're not playing you just have to keep fit and ready waiting for your chance."
