Glentoran 1-0 Linfield: Mick McDermott happy to come out on top in "emotional" Big Two derby

Mick McDermott admits his blood pressure was probably elevated a level or two following Friday night's "emotional" Big Two derby.

His Glens side returned to the top of the Irish Premiership with a gutsy 1-0 win over Linfield at the Oval.

Conor McMenamin's goal on the hour mark settled a cagey game in East Belfast, with the win preserved by Aaron McCarey's heroics in injury time.

"It is nice to get a result in any derby game. We are no different," McDermott told the BBC.

"It was an emotional game for everyone - the players, staff. And really enjoyable for the fans no doubt. So we're happy to get the three points, that's the main thing.

"My blood pressure is up a little bit, but that is to be expected. We won't get too high when we win at this stage of the season, and we don't get too low when we lose.

"Tonight's a win, and an important one which creates some distance between us and the pack around us. Other teams now have to play tomorrow and we will see how the results go then.

"But we're happy to get the three points in a hard-fought match."

Asked whether Friday's win would give his players a lift heading into the final 11 games, McDermott said: "We have been confident since the start of the season. This won't change what we chat about in the changing room.

"This is three points picked up. It is an important win because it is our big rivals and they are a good team.

"They are top of the table with us for a reason, so it is an important step for us but only three points."
