Glenn Quinn murder appeal: Brother says family will stop at nothing as reward increased to £30,000

The brother of murdered Carrickfergus man Glenn Quinn says he and his family will stop at nothing to ensure justice is served over the brutal killing.

The terminally-ill barman was murdered in January 2020, with the attack linked to the South East Antrim UDA.

He would have marked his 50th birthday today and the Quinn family say a private citizen has added another £10,000 to a reward fund for information leading to the conviction of his killers.

The charity Crimestoppers has also added an extra £10,000, bringing the total to £30,000.

Glenn's brother Martin said his brother had maybe only a year and a half to two years left to live, but that his family had been robbed of that time with him by violent thugs.

He said Glenn had been critical of an incident in Carrickfergus which was linked to the South-East Antrim UDA, which led to him being threatened late in December 2019.

"Glenn was really concerned about that, Glenn was terrified," he said.

"Unfortunately then, on January 3 into January 4, that threat was played out against Glenn.

"Three individuals attacked him with iron bars and baseball bats and left him with absolutely horrific injuries, 52 fractures in his chest alone.

"He passed away lonely, cold and terrified and it's an absolute disgrace, an absolute disgrace what they did to my brother.

"We were robbed, we were robbed of giving him the love and compassion that any family would give to one of their own that was seriously ill and dying."

Martin said his brother was very popular within the town, always went out of his way to help people and had no involvement in any type of criminality.

"To this day when we're sitting in mum's house and the door opens, I look to see and then your heart drops because you know it's not Glenn walking in," he said.

"We miss him every day, every single day."

Martin has campaigned ever since his brother's murder, trying to apply pressure to the paramilitary outfit and the individuals he believes were linked to the attack.

"We as a family very much feel the weight of responsibility to make sure that these people are brought to justice," he said.

"That they receive the cold, hard justice that they deserve - life sentences."

Martin and his family have been threatened several times in the course of trying to get justice for their murdered loved one, but said it will not put him off.

"Threats? They're wasting their time," he said.

"We will shine a spotlight on the three individuals that murdered Glenn - by their own actions they have brought the attention to them and their former colleagues, the attention of the Paramilitary Crime Task Force."

Martin was keen to stress that those responsible for the murder of Glenn did not have any pseudo-authority simply because they were linked to a paramilitary gang.

"There is no loyalism amongst the people that murdered Glenn - these are a bunch of people who wrapped themselves in a Union flag of convenience, to give themselves credibility," he said.

"All they did was they attacked a man who was dying, and it was very clear that he was frail and fragile.

"What kind of savages are they?"

Martin issued a heartfelt appeal to anyone in Carrickfergus who might hold any information on his brother's murder and said coming forward could prevent someone else suffering the heartache he and his family have.

"We would ask the good people of Carrickfergus to search their hearts.

"If they don't feel they can come forward, they can contact Crimestoppers, because these savages will do it again - there are seven unsolved murders in Carrick all linked to this gang.

"Some other person's brother, son is going to be attacked by these savages, we don't want to see that - we hate the thought of another family having to go through what we've been through."

The PSNI said they believe people in Carrickfergus know who is responsible for Glenn's murder and described them as "dangerous individuals".

"The pain and loss experienced by his family is today, as raw as ever," said Detective Chief Inspector Neil McGuinness.

“The family is frustrated and like any of us, deserve answers and justice for their loved one."

The independent charity Crimestoppers is now offering a £20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for Glenn's murder.

Anyone with any information is asked to telephone detectives on 101; or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
