Former England football manager Glenn Hoddle has been ordered to pay more than £1,100 after he was convicted of speeding on the M25.
The 66-year-old ex-Spurs and Chelsea legend was behind the wheel of an Audi SUV when it was caught on a speed camera travelling at 82mph. The incident happened at 12.36am on June 16 last year, shortly after Hoddle had appeared as the special guest at a meet-and-greet evening at Bromley FC.
Police used images said to be of Hoddle’s speeding Audi on the northbound carriageway of the M25 between junctions 14 and 15 in Hillingdon to prove the case.
Hoddle scored 118 goals in 544 club appearances for Spurs, Swindon, Chelsea, and Monaco, and he picked up 58 England caps across a decade of international appearances.
He managed some of his former clubs Spurs, Chelsea, and Swindon, as well Wolves and Southampton, and in 1996 Hoddle was appointed England manager. After his retirement from coaching, Hoddle forged a successful career as a pundit and co-commentator for ITV, BT Sport and ESPN.
He also appeared in the 2021 series of The Masked Singer.
Hoddle was prosecuted at Lavender Hill magistrates’ court over the speeding offence through the single justice procedure, allowing a magistrate to convict and sentence him behind closed doors based on written evidence alone.
Police wrote to Hoddle in June last year at his £1 million home in Maidenhead, and he admitted being the driver of the Audi. He entered a guilty plea online on January 8 this year.
A magistrate, sitting in private, convicted Hoddle and imposed a fine of £769, and ordered him to also pay £307 costs and a £90 victim surcharge. Hoddle was also handed three penalty points for his licence, and has been told to settle the £1,166 court bill by January 22. He did not have to appear in court to be sentenced.
