Rutherglen Glencairn have been pushing for a result like their 2-0 win at Glenafton for weeks, according to boss Willie Harvey, but he says they’re not safe yet.
Harry Mitchell’s deflected shot sent Glens on their way to a good win, and then headed across goal for Reece Pearson to score the clincher and leave the South Lanarkshire side just above the drop-zone.
Harvey says a deflection to open the scoring is exactly the kind of break his side have been crying out for as they ended a nine-game run without a win, which also saw them thumped 5-0 by Arthurlie in the West of Scotland Cup second round in midweek.
He said: “It has actually been a wee while coming.
“Looking back, as much as results have been poor, we’ve only really lost the Cumbernauld United game 1-0, and the other ones have been draws.
“It has been coming, we’ve just been needing that wee sort of break, something to go our way for a change, and to a wee point, that’s what happened on Saturday.
“The first goal came from what should have been a penalty; the tackle was made inside the box, the referee gave it outside – we’ve watched the highlights.
“But we scored from that with a ball into the box and a deflection – and that’s the sort of break that hasn’t been going our way in the past few weeks.”
Harvey added: “The players have been working their backsides off, and probably the poorest they’ve played was probably the Cumbernauld game.
“The game during the week against Arthurlie didn’t even enter into our equation, because we only had 11 players – and one of them wasn’t even fit to play – and we were protecting players for Saturday there.
“The result was very important, it gives everybody at the club a wee boost.
“You see that wee thought that maybe our luck has changed a wee bit now, and we’ll take it from there.
“I’ve never faulted the boys for their attitude, they keep working away.”
Glens follow up Wednesday night’s clash with a home game against 10th-placed Benburb.
A win will move them to within two points of their visitors, and closer to safety.
Harvey said: “We’re not safe, we can’t take anything for granted yet and we’ve got a couple of important games coming up.
“There’s a long way to go, but if a couple of results go our way and we get the right result then it could go our way.”
