Scott Arfield is one key candidate to have signed a new Rangers deal - but don't count Glen Kamara out either.
The Light Blues have a host of stars out-of-contract come the summer and there's big decision to be made by new manager Michael Beale, who takes charge of his first Premiership match versus Hibs on Thursday. He said pre-match that alongside young centre-back Leon King, a senior star is set to pen fresh terms, setting a guessing game alight.
A caller phoned in to Superscoreboard to predict who they thought could be Rangers' mystery man and tipped Scott Arfield as the key suspect. Former goalkeeper Cammy Bell responded to the claim and reckon the 34-year-old midfielder who's contract has just under six months left to run could be a wise shout. He explained: "I think he could be right with Scott Arfield. He probably fits the bill in that they might want to keep him around the club.
"He's 34 but I think he can still do a job for Rangers. Domestically he scores goals for them and he candidate the midfield. He's a good professional and Rangers need to keep some of these guys around the place.
"They know the culture. To have these guys there who have been and done it at the top level is really important. For me, it wouldn't surprise me.
"You need to have players who have been in and around as you will have guys coming in from different countries, never played in Scotland before and don't know much about the club and its history. Scott Arfield is a great pro to have at the club."
While Arfield would be high on the bookmakers odds list, one caller also suggested midfield peer Kamara as an option. He's under-contract until 2025 but tying him down for even longer could see him make Rangers a good cash return on their £50k amid swirling transfer rumours.
Bell explained "Under Steven Gerrard, for me, he was one of the top players. He was performing at a real high level and then since Gio van Bronckhorst, it just didn't quite work out and it looked as if he fell out of favour.
"Football has shown us things change very quickly. Michael Beale has come in and for me will play him as he likes him as a player and a person. It could be that statement of intent to say yes, there's bid coming in, but we want to keep this player at Rangers.
"We are signing him on a long-term contract and If anyone wants to buy him, it's going to be huge money (needing offered). So it's an absolute possibility he could be the one as I think he will now play week in, week out under Michael Beale."
