Glee and Mindhunter star Jonathan Groff joins the cast of the new series of Doctor Who

Award-winning star of stage and screen Jonathan Groff has been cast in a guest role in the upcoming series of Doctor Who. He’ll star alongside new Time Lord Ncuti Gatwa and his companion Millie Gibson, who'll be playing Ruby Sunday in the BBC series.

Speaking about his role, Jonathan said: “I am so thrilled to jump into the extraordinary mind of Russell T Davies and watch the incredible Ncuti Gatwa soar in this iconic role!”

Writer Russell T Davies, who returns to the show he brought back in 2005, added: “This is an incredible coup, and a great honour, to get such a huge star striding on to our set. So strap on your space boots, this is going to be a blast!”

Over the last couple of months, several big names have been announced to be joining the upcoming series of Doctor Who. Recently, Ru Paul’s Drag Race star Jinkx Monsoon was cast in a role described as The Doctor’s “most powerful enemy yet” - read more about that here.

Throughout his career Jonathan has already had several well known screen roles. He shot to fame when he landed the role of Jessie in musical comedy drama Glee. He also starred as Eric in the box office hit Knock at the Cabin and Holden Ford in the critically acclaimed series Mindhunter. Last year Jonathan played the new Agent Smith in The Matrix Resurrections and is also known for his work in Disney’s Frozen films.

Jonathan has also made his mark on Broadway, dazzling audiences with his famous performance as King George III in Hamilton, where he was nominated for not only a Tony Award, but also a Primetime Emmy Award for the live stage recording.

Doctor Who returns in November 2023 with three special episodes with David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor to coincide with the 60th anniversary.
