Glaswegians issued DWP cost of living payment dates as Scots urged to check eligibility

The dates for the first instalment of the cost-of-living payment has officially been announced by the UK Government.

The money, which is due to be paid automatically to those eligible, will be paid in three instalments with the first worth £301. This means people do not need to apply for the extra support.

Totalling £900, the first of three tax-free payments, starting this month, will be followed by two instalments set to be paid in the autumn followed by the spring, the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed.

The dates given are between April 25 and May 17 of this year however in order to qualify for a payment, you must receive one of these benefits:

  • Universal Credit
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Income Support
  • Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Working Tax Credit

To claim the extra cash boost, Glaswegians will need to have been entitled to a payment for one of these benefits between January 26 and February 25 2023.

In addition to the three payments, a further cash boost worth £150 will be given to eligible disabled people and £300 for pensioners due later this year, meaning the most vulnerable can receive up to £1,350 in direct payments.

The DWP are also encouraging low-income pensioners not already getting Pension Credit to check their eligibility, as they can still qualify for the £301 Cost of Living Payment if they make a successful backdated Pension Credit application by May 19.

Advice Direct Scotland, a charity who offer financial advice and support to Scots, have said that people should check their free online benefits tool, available at advice.scot, where people can check that they are claiming everything they are eligible for.

Commenting, Julie Murphy team lead for advice.scot, said: "The first cost-of-living payment of £301 will provide welcome support for people on low incomes across Scotland.

"It has never been more important to ensure we are receiving the benefits support we are entitled to.

"Those who are struggling can reach out to the team at advice.scot where we can check your eligibility and help with applications if needed."

The team are available on 0808 800 9060 from Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm.
