Glasgow weather: Met Office issues yellow warning for thunderstorms as 'flooding likely'

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Glasgow amid a heavy downpour currently hitting the city.

Putting the alert into force today, the warning is set to start at 4pm on Tuesday (September 6) and last until 11pm.

Discussing the weather for this evening, which comes as Celtic are set to play Real Madrid in Glasgow, the BBC have said: "It will turn sunnier in the afternoon, but there will also be further isolated showers, which will be heavy in places with the chance of thunder. This evening, clouds will increase from the south, and scattered showers will move through during the first part of the night. The showers will be locally heavy with the chance of thunder."

With more rain and thunderstorm set to hit the city, the Met Office explained the reasoning for the yellow warning adding: "Bands of heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely to move northwards across Scotland through Tuesday afternoon and evening.

"These may bring 20 to 25 mm in an hour and perhaps 40 to 60 mm in 3-4 hours in one or two places, mainly in the east. Lightning and hail may be additional hazards. Rain and thunderstorms are expected to move northwards overnight then ease and clear early on Wednesday morning."

According to the Met Office, we can expect delays to train services, a chance of some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes as well as flooding of a few homes and businesses likely which could lead to some damage to buildings or structures.

The experts also add that there is a "good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus" and "some short term loss of power and other services is likely."
