Glasgow weather as snow and 'blizzard conditions' expected amid yellow Met Office warning

Glasgow is set for 'blizzard conditions' this week with snow set to fall across the city tomorrow.

Temperatures will plummet, with lows of -5C set to bring a cold snap overnight amid days of freezing conditions across the country.

There is a Met Office yellow weather warning in place from 3am tomorrow until 6pm on Friday. Forecasters are warning that "heavy snow has the potential to cause significant disruption" across both days, with Glasgow expected to experience up to 20cm of the white stuff.

What to expect from Met Office yellow weather warning

In an update to the yellow weather warning covering Glasgow, the Met Office explained: "Snow could develop quite widely across the warning area through Thursday and Friday as a potentially deep area of low pressure moves across the UK."

The forecasters continue that snow across the central belt will and "persist through much of Friday" with it soon turning into rain and washing away what is left of the white stuff.

Around three to five centimetres of snow is expected widely across the area with five to 10 cm of snow across broad areas, even at low elevations. This increases with around 15 to 20 cm accumulating across the central and northern areas with the figure rising even further with parts of the central of the Central Belt and the southern Highlands seeing as much as 30 to 40 cm of snow in places with forecasters explaining that strong winds may may lead to "blizzard conditions and drifting of lying snow."

Glasgow is set to see around 14cm of snowfall on Friday and 12cm across the weekend and into Monday, according to WXCharts.

The Met Office has released images of a snow map showing that Glasgow is among the areas worst affected tweeting: "The focus of the #snow then shifts further north on Thursday and Friday. Significant disruption is likely in places and strengthening winds may lead to blizzard conditions and drifting of lying snow."

The first of the snow is set to fall in the city at around 6pm with it set to continue throughout the night and into the early hours of Friday.

The snow is then set to stop at around 9am on Friday (March 10) with a mixture of sunny intervals and rain set to occur at the same time.

Travel warnings in place for Glaswegians

Scotrail have issued a warning to travellers after another cold night with them tweeting that people should take care on platforms and pathways as surfaces may be slippery.

  • There is a slight chance that roads may become blocked by deep snow, with many stranded vehicles and passengers
  • There is a small chance that communities could be cut off for several days
