Glasgow snow and ice alert today as Met Office issues yellow weather warning

A yellow weather warning for snow and ice has been issued in Glasgow.

The warning came into effect at 7am this morning and will remain in place until 9pm tonight.

Glaswegians have been warned to prepare for a period of freezing rain and snow which could lead to possible travel delays on roads, stranding some vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel.

Power cuts also may occur, with the potential to affect other services such as mobile phone coverage. Rural communities in particular are warned they 'could become cut off'.

Residents are being urged to take care when out and about as there is a 'chance of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces'.

A statement from the Met Office reads: " Across the far north of England and Scotland, snow is more likely with temporary accumulations of 1-3 cm at low levels, and 5-10 cm more typical across upland areas and isolated 10-15 cm on high ground north of the Central Belt.

"Once rain becomes established, all lying snow will melt rapidly. In addition to the snow and ice, strong winds are expected across all parts, with gales or severe gales mainly across high ground. This will lead to blizzard conditions in some areas for a time."
