Glasgow schools to close for three days next month during strike action

All primary schools in Glasgow will close schools for three days next month due to strike action, the city council has decided.

GMB Scotland and Unison Scotland have given notice to Glasgow City Council of industrial action in schools and nurseries on September 6, 7 and 8.

The strikes will involve learning workers, administration staff, catering, cleaning and janitor services and school crossing patrollers in pursuit of a better pay deal from Cosla, the local government organisation.

Glasgow City Council director of education Douglas Hutchison confirmed some schools will shut on the strike days.

This will include nurseries, primaries and ASL schools across the city but secondaries will remain open. They will reopen on Friday, September 9.

In a letter to parents Hutchison said: "Our aim, as always, is to secure a safe environment for our staff and young people and maintain continuity of learning where possible but the extent of the action on this occasion means that we have had to take the decision to close all the city’s Primary Schools, Early Learning and Childcare establishments, and ASL schools."

Meanwhile up to 22,000 student exam appeals will be “severely delayed” after workers voted in favour of strike action, Unite has warned.

Staff at the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) opted to go on strike after they voted down a “derisory” pay offer of less that four per cent.

Unite confirmed that the strikes will happen on 8, 15 and 16 September.

The SQA has said it will continue to discuss the pay offer with unions and the Scottish government.
