Glasgow Sandyford clinic protest sees hundreds turn out in response to anti-abortion group

Hundreds of activists have gathered outside the Sandyford Clinic in Glasgow in response to a planned protest by an anti-abortion group.

The Scottish Family Party (SFP) previously revealed plans to "brick up" the clinic, which provides sexual, reproductive, and emotional health services across Glasgow, during the protest.

SFP member Niall Fraser said he was "willing to do time" to "make their feelings known" about the services the Sandyford provides. The group described the clinic as "vulgar and corrupting".

A counter-demonstration planned by Cabaret Against the Hate Speech is also being held on Sandyford Place.

The group said: "The Sandyford clinic is a lifeline for a lot of people in Glasgow/ Scotland for many different reasons. We believe in access to abortion for everyone and trans-affirming healthcare is a human right!"

Demonstrators have lined the street with many holding the trans flag and posters. Counter-protestors are also singing karaoke.

The clinic is currently closed and a number of police are on the scene assisting the demonstration.

It's understood the SFP attended the clinic at around 8am to carry out their demonstration calling for the service to be "shut down".

Back Off Scotland, who are campaigning for buffer zones around clinics that provide abortion services in Scotland, said the threat's made by the SFP were "incredibly worrying".

They added: "To want to remove access to abortion this badly is bad enough - but to want to do this to a clinic that also provides rape crisis services is unspeakable."

The SFP said: "The Sandyford Clinic in Glasgow offers harmful ideologically-driven "treatments" to children experiencing gender confusion from all over Scotland.

"We value all human life, so we oppose its destruction except in the most extreme of circumstances. The abortion service at the Sandyford Clinic is run by BPAS. BPAS are an abortion provider and they are a significant driver behind the campaign for buffer zones around abortion clinics."
