Glasgow's The Admiral bar to move into new venue next week after 'bittersweet' closure

An iconic Glasgow bar is preparing to close its doors for the final time but will be welcoming customers at a new venue in just a few days' time.

Just a month after it was announced that The Admiral bar would be closing due to redevelopment, bosses have confirmed it will be reopening just a stone's throw away under a new roof.

After the final closing party on Saturday (March 11), the team will be moving to The Woods - also on Waterloo Street - with an official launch planned for March 17.

We previously reported how the owners of The Woods announced that they would be moving on after nearly nine years in the city centre venue.

The Admiral manager Dave Ross and his team, including daughter Siobhan, will be giving the pub a bit of "TLC" and a quick lick of paint to give it the 'homely' feel of the original before getting straight back to business.

Dave told Glasgow Live: "It's been an emotional few days. Last night we had the family of Fred Grome come to visit us. He was the first manager of the pub in the 1960's.

"His daughter came up and told us how wonderful she thought the place still was and that they'd enjoyed the world-class macaroni. It was really very touching.

"It's a bittersweet moment as we're looking forward to the new opening but sad to close the doors for a final time."

The new pub will initially be named The Admiral Woods - after Sir Andrew Wood, an admiral in the Scottish Navy who was effectively a legalised pirate.

However, regulars from the nearby Morgan Stanley building have already come up with their own name of 'The Wadmiral' but the jury is still out on whether that will stick...

As well as painting the inside of the new venue a bit darker, some of the much-loved pictures from The Admiral will be moving over to make it feel just like home. The team hopes to be able to maintain the 'musical and quirky' vibe it's known for.

And, although the function space is much smaller than the original, it's hoped that gigs and DJ nights will be able to be part of the new setup.

Dave has described the basement as "much more comfortable and warm" than the previous and has already had enquiries about private functions.

He added: "We're going to have to adapt but we think there's a lot of positives with the new place and we're looking forward to seeing everyone there.

"I'll be at The Admiral for the final day collecting glasses and pressing flesh with everyone who's come to say goodbye.

"We've had so many people reach out since the news of the closure with some incredible stories. The pub has always been a place for everyone and we hope that a lot of them will be able to come to celebrate with us.

"What a rogue's gallery we've got tonight - Lynne Pretty Ugly, Bob Simply Thrilled, Bobby Bluebell (#Legend), Stephen RM2, and my bestie Michael Kilkie... so two guys with Top of the Pop pedigree on the decks."

Admiral Woods will be officially opening on March 17 with Gerry Lyons on the decks for his popular Derry Girls club night.

Until we meet again, farewell to The Admiral bar as we know it!
