Glasgow roads in lockdown as fire fighters battle city blaze for 24 hours

A billow of smoke continues to rise from Glasgow city centre today, as fire crews battle the Kingston Street blaze almost 24 hours after reports were made.

The fire broke out in the Tradeston area of the city, near Barclays building, shortly before 10am yesterday, writes the Daily Record.

Emergency services sped to the scene in efforts to combat the raging inferno.

Nine fire appliances were in attendance as well as dozens of firefighters who attempted to put out the blaze. It is understood crews remain on site today, although it is not yet clear how many.

Road closures are still in place, affecting Kingston Street at Tradeston Street to Commerce Street, and from Nelson Street at Commerce Street to Tradeston Street.

Officers have warned this will impact traffic heading into the city or trying to reach the M8, M74 and M77. Drivers are being urged to plan ahead, use alternative routes if possible and expect delays on their commute.

The area near to the focal point of police and fire crews activity still remains locked down to secure surrounding buildings. Footage taken of the incident yesterday showed white smoke wafting over the city centre. There were also reports of a smell of burning plastic.

It is believed no one has been injured in the incident.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Cordons are in place as the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service continue to extinguish a blaze and make secure surrounding buildings in the Tradeston area."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 9.54am on Sunday, 16 October to reports of a fire affecting a building at Kingston Street, Glasgow.

“Operations Control mobilised four fire appliances and one height vehicles to the scene. “There are no reported casualties. One appliance remains in attendance as crews continue to work to extinguish the fire.”
