Glasgow restaurant and bakery appear in The Observer's top food list

Two Glasgow eateries have appeared in a monthly roundup of The Observer's top food spots and products in the UK and Ireland.

Titled '50 things we love in the world of food right now', the article is a collection of the newspaper's favourite restaurants, cafés, and food-related goods in February.

Repping Glasgow on the list are burger joint Big Counter and bakery Two Eight Seven.

The former was commended for its contemporary take on classic comfort food, whilst the latter received praise for its eclectic selection of sweet and savoury bakes.

Here is a summary of what The Observer had to say about the two Glasgow food spots.

Big Counter, 76 Victoria Road

According to The Observer, this southside favourite serves up "glammed-up comfort food".

Known across Glasgow for its mouthwatering burgers, Big Counter was also praised by the newspaper for its "hearty old-school favourites".

Writer Ben Mervis noted the eatery's "no-frills approach to comfort eating", as well as its humorous and unique menu.

He added: "Recent standouts include a serving of roast mallard with pease pudding and crisps, rarebit gratin and beef and onions with a cheesy aligot mash. It only opened last summer but Big Counter has already earned a loyal following.

Two Eight Seven, 287 Langside Road

Dubbed "the best little bakery" by The Observer, food writer Ben Mervis said that Govanhill neighbourhood hub Two Seven Eight was a treasure trove of bread and sourdough rolls.

Particular praise was given to owners Sam and Anna Luntley's "delicious laminated pastries such as cardamom and bergamot morning buns".

Mervis continued: "Anna fills the glass display cabinet and back tables with 25 of her sweet and savoury bakes: from macaroni hand-pies to beremeal brownies, and her own creations such as “lunar cookies” made with locally produced Barebones chocolate and buckwheat flour, topped with chocolate ganache and vanilla buttercream.
