Glasgow reacts as George Square and St Enoch Christmas markets organisers pull out

With September now underway, many people will soon be turning their sights to Halloween and shortly after, Christmas.

And whilst the run up to the big day involves endless shopping trips to find gifts for everyone, Christmas markets are also something that many of us look forward to.

However, this year they will not be returning to Glasgow as of now, with organisers Glasgow Christmas Markets pulling out.

It comes as the team announced they will not be organising them this year, announcing the news on social media on Wednesday (September 7).

They said: "We will not be organising Glasgow Christmas Market 2022. For information on other festivities in Glasgow this year then please contact Glasgow City Council directly."

The team previously organised the markets in both St Enoch and George Square. However, when the news was announced, Glasgow had a mixed reaction, with many saying they would miss it whilst others weren't overly fussed.

Many people also began speculating as to why this was happening, with some blaming Glasgow City Council. However, the council are not involved in the organisation of Christmas markets, as it instead falls to an independent organiser to plan.

A spokesperson for Glasgow Loves Christmas said: “We are working on plans for Christmas and look forward to making announcements for this year in due course.”

Taking to Glasgow Live's Facebook page, people made their feelings clear, with one saying: "Can’t say I’ll miss it. Overpriced, location/set up caused issues with accessing St Enoch subway and I’m not sure the permanent retailers benefited (and they’re the ones paying rates and employing people)."

Another added: "It was mince anyway! Overpriced and nothing original! Bring lovely wee craft markets, fairy lights and café areas and host it in the Barras which needs a good clear out anyway!"

"Oh shame, we have family visiting from overseas and this was on their wish list," commented a third, whilst a fourth said: "There nothing left to celebrate in Glasgow no Christmas light switch no markets no shows no Hogmanay parties any more Glasgow really has nothing to offer nowadays when it comes to the winter season! Everyone will be heading to Edinburgh at this rate."

Will you miss the Christmas markets this year? Let us know in the comments.
