Glasgow parents need to work 59 hours per month just to pay for childcare, study finds

The cost of living crisis is causing many people to cut back on how much they are spending, with households up and down the country being forced to cut back on necessities such as food and energy bills.

Amid the increases, research from Play Like Mum looked at monthly childcare cost compared to salary and hourly wages. And their data revealed that Glasgow parents are having to work 59 hours to be able to afford childcare costs.

Looking at the data for Glasgow specifically, the average monthly childcare costs come in at £650.04 with the average monthly salary, after tax, said to be £1,796, with the average hourly wage £11.05.

The findings suggest that people living in the city will need to work 59 hours a month just to pay for childcare costs - 36.19 per cent of the average month take home wage.

Whilst Glasgow was found to be the 10th cheapest place for childcare costs, Edinburgh is the 7th cheapest location with residents needing to work, on average, 56 hours to cover costs for childcare, amounting to 34.54 per cent of the average wages in the capital.

Discussing how they gathered the data, they explained: "We were able to find the monthly cost of childcare, the average monthly salary, and the hourly wage for residents in each UK area.

"We were then able to calculate the number of hours that parents in that area would need to work to pay for the monthly cost of childcare, and what percentage of their wages would account for it."
