A MAN believed to be from Glasgow has been arrested with no licence following a fatal hit-and-run in Ibiza, Spanish police said on Thursday.
Bernat Ribas, 49, was cycling along a narrow road called the Camino de Benimussa around 8pm on Tuesday evening when he was killed in the tragic head-on collision with a Jeep Wrangler.
According to Spanish police, the 35-year-old driver believed to be from Glasgow allegedly fled the scene of the crash.
An island-wide search was launched by The Civil Guard who combed Ibiza on Wednesday looking for the person believed to be responsible.
The car involved in the alleged incident was recovered in an isolated area of Sant Josep de Sa Talaia, a small village near the scene of the crash.
The Scot allegedly involved in the accident turned himself into Civil Guard officers in Sant Antoni de Portmany shortly after midnight on Wednesday where he was arrested.
The man is being held in police custody pending a court appearance.
A spokesperson for The Civil Guard wrote in a statement on Thursday that they had arrested the alleged perpetrator following the fatal road accident in the Cami de Benimussa.
They said: "The Civil Guard has arrested a 35-year-old man of British nationality as the alleged perpetrator of the crimes of reckless homicide, leaving the scene of the accident, reckless driving and driving without ever having obtained authorization for it.
"After the road accident allegedly caused by the detainee, he fled from the scene.
"The Civil Guard mobilized yesterday throughout the island of Ibiza to locate him. Traffic agents who were directing the investigation found the vehicle causing the accident in an isolated area of the municipality of Sant Josep de Sa Talaia."
They added: "At the stroke of midnight, the detainee turned himself in at the Civil Guard offices in Sant Antoni de Portmany, where after being read his rights and the reasons for the arrest, he was taken to the Can Sifre in Eivissa amid the investigation of the proceedings."
