Glasgow food ordering app set to expand into England

Glasgow-based food ordering app Mealzo is expanding out of the central belt further into Scotland and south of the border.

Established during the pandemic, the business developed from being a tech company focused on payment systems and website building for takeaways and restaurants into a single portal to take on the likes of Uber Eats, Just Eat and Deliveroo.

Its key differentiator is the 0% commission offered to food outlets, helping small businesses keep more of their earnings.

This model has seen more than 1,000 takeways and restaurants sign up.

Mealzo has now opened an office in Manchester and another team in London, with a marketing campaign rolling out this week in cities like Aberdeen, Dundee, Newcastle, Birmingham and Bristol.

A relaunched app is part of a drive to build the customer database for managing director Reza Peroz, who said: "The majority of our partners pass the savings they make from not paying commission on as discounts for customers using Mealzo.

"We aim to bring customers on and ensure we are the most affordable portal around - in uncertain times, people are looking to save wherever and whenever they can."

He continued: "Being based in Glasgow, there is an important sense of community that was instilled into us when we kickstarted Mealzo here."

Each month, the business runs a ‘local hero’ initiative with partners, as well as organising charity events in local communities.

"Managing a hospitality business with the rising cost of everything from energy to stock, it's unsustainable to keep on paying high commission rates," said Peroz.

"We’d like to think we’re the solution to a growing problem and we want to help small businesses across the country."
