Glasgow flooding 'disaster' saw vehicles submerged after heavy rainfall

We've had a beautiful spell of sunshine and warm weather recently but it came to an abrupt end on Friday (June 16) after torrential downpour hit Glasgow - causing chaos on roads across the city.

One street that was hit hard by heavy rain was Aitkenhead Road, in the south side, as multiple vehicles submerged and struggled to get through the massive amounts of water that gathered.

Local resident Nathan Johnston shared a video with Glasgow Live which shows vehicles, including a bus, desperately trying to get through to the other side.

The junction of Aitkenhead Road, at Curtis Avenue, was closed off to traffic following the heavy rainfall and flooding.

Nathan claims he was stranded on a bus and felt like he had "jumped into a pool" when he got off.

The 18-year-old said: "Buses were unable to get out of it, causing distress for many passengers. I was on one of the buses that got stuck in it and decided to make the move out, it was like jumping into a pool.

"It was terrible and unbearable to watch people trying to get home from work and having to get out their cars and push them.

"All ways blocked to my house so I had no option but to walk through with an old lady and carry her bags while parents lifted their children up to get through the disaster.

"It was disheartening to see a lot of elderly folk unable to make the crossing and stranded for hours upon hours.

"Cars couldn’t start after being pushed out and emergency services were trying to control the scene."

It's reported that the flooding was resolved before 10pm on Friday night with Aitkenhead Road fully reopened to traffic shortly after.
