At this time of year, people will be buying gifts for their family and friends but if you have a four legged furry friend, you may be buying them one too and making sure that they are not left out.
Many people are also gifted a dog at this time of year but it's important to remember that a dog is for life and that they are part of the family as much as anyone.
But if you're looking to get a pet soon, now is a good time to start looking with the hopes that you could get one in the new year.

Discussing adopting a dog, Adam Clowes, Dogs Trust Operations Director told Glasgow Live: “Every dog deserves to find their special someone, and this doesn’t change because it’s Christmas. Dog ownership is a wonderful thing, but our slogan is about reminding people that it’s a lifelong commitment which must be carefully considered, not just at Christmas but all year round.
“Not everyone celebrates the festive season, and for some families having additional time off from work and other commitments could make it a good time to settle in a new dog.
"We will only ever rehome a dog after careful discussion with their new family, and if they’re having a particularly busy Christmas, the dog will stay and celebrate Christmas with us, ready to head off to their new home in the New Year.”
So if you are looking to take home a forever friend in the new year, here's some dogs you should consider that have been long term lodgers and deserve a loving family.
Dogs in Glasgow that are looking for their forever home this New Year
Jax
Breed: Lurcher Cross
Sex: Male
Age: 8 + years
Size: Large
May live with: Secondary school age children.
Reference ID: 1247310
Jax's ideal home
Jax does not have a lot of background information as he sadly came in as a stray. They explain: "He can find life a little overwhelming at times so will need a gentle and patient family to give him lots of time and space to settle in his new home. He has come on leaps and bounds with his training during his time with us, so he is looking to continue this in a home. Someone who is home most of the day would also be perfect for him although he can be left for two to three hours. "
If you are thinking about getting a dog, why not consider Jax? You can find out more about him here.
Captain
Breed: Terrier (Staffordshire Bull) Cross
Sex: Male
Age: 8 + years
Size: Medium
May live with: Secondary school age children.
Reference ID: 1251874
Captain's ideal home
The Dog's Trust say that his forever home would ideally be one with space so that if he needs to be on his own, for example when visitors are around, he can do so.
Despite being loving and affectionate, he can be a "little bit worried by new people" which is why some extra space would be ideal.

They add: "He can be reactive towards other dogs so having more rural areas to explore will make walkies more enjoyable for both Captain and his owner. He must be the only pet in the home and we are confident that he will enjoy being the centre of attention. He is very affectionate with his family, he will try to give kisses when he can and enjoys snuggles on the sofa.
"It would be best for Captain to live with children aged 16 years and older as we are unsure of his experience with young kids. Captain would prefer to have someone around for most of the day to help him adjust, but once settled he could be left for a couple of hours. He will need direct access to his own secure garden with 6ft fence to give him somewhere safe to enjoy some time off lead as he will need to remain on lead when in public places."
Captain needs an experienced owner. If you are interested, you can find out more about Captain here.
Tigger
Breed: Lurcher Cross
Sex: Male
Age: 2 - 5 years
Size: Large
May live with: Tigger needs a home with no other pets or children
Reference ID: 1222481
Tigger's ideal home
Tigger has not sadly had the best start in life but has come on "leaps and bounds" since coming Glasgow's Dog's Trust.
Tigger needs a committed owner who can continue his training therefore an active owner would be ideal. In addition to this, it would be great if you could be at home with him often as he doesn't like being left on his own. This is something that could be built up over time once he is settled into his new home though
They add: "This enthusiastic guy can get himself worked up in stressful situations, but he has been progressing well and we will need his new owners to continue to encourage calm behaviours with positive reinforcement-based training. For this reason, he would be best with children over the age of 16 years old. Tigger is a favourite with staff and we can't wait to see him land on his paws in a forever home."
If you can help Tigger, continue his training and give him a loving home, he will soon settle in and become your best friend. You can find out more about him here.
Jack
Breed: Crossbreed
Sex: Male
Age: 8+ years
Size: Large
May live with: Secondary school age children.
Reference ID: 1245851
Jack's ideal home
Jack is said to be a fun, loving and energetic dog who is looking for a home with a family that has owned a dog like him before.
He is happy to walk in quiet areas where he can relax and enjoy exploring with his new family.
They add: "He can live with children aged 16 years & above and this does include visiting. Jack will need a home with its own secure private garden with a 6ft fence where he can run around and spend lots of time with his new family as when he is out in public he must be kept on lead and muzzle. Don’t let that put you off this wonderful boy though as he will make a brilliant addition to a family."
Jack needs a forever home. You can find out more about this four legged friend here.
