Glasgow council remove George Square benches ahead of Rangers celebrations

Glasgow's George Square is being prepared for possible celebrations by Rangers fans.

Glasgow City Council teams have been fencing off statues, grassy areas, and flower beds ahead of the Europa League Final on Wednesday evening.

Memorial benches that usually sit in the square have been removed prior to the game that is due to kick off at 8pm.

It comes after Rangers supporters damaged the benches during their Scottish Premiership title celebrations in May last year.

Council bosses said the final bill to clear up George Square following the gathering cost taxpayers £58,000 due to the destruction of the memorial benches and damage to statues.

Cleansing teams worked through the night to clean up rubbish and thousands of broken bottles that were left strewn across the ground.

Fans also damaged traffic lights, scaffolding, security fencing, and historic statues including memorials to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

Fans later fundraised to pay the £11,000 bill to repair the damage caused.

Similar scenes unfolded on Saturday as Celtic supporters gathered at Glasgow Cross to celebrate their title win.

Damage was caused to the historic Glasgow Mercat Cross building and litter was left covering the streets of the Merchant City.

Glasgow City Council has been approached for comment.
