Glasgow City Chambers bomb scare over as police confirm 'suspicious package' not viable

Police enquiries are ongoing after Glasgow City Chambers was partially evacuated amid a report of a suspicious package.

Officers raced to the George Square building alongside other emergency services after the alarm was raised around 3.20pm this afternoon.

A police cordon was also put in place while specialist officers analysed the package, with part of the building evacuated as a precaution.

Police were subsequently able to establish that the item was not believed to be viable. It is being removed from the building.

There is no threat to the wider public.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "We received a report of a suspicious package at the City Chambers, George Square, Glasgow around 3.20pm on Monday, 21 February, 2022.

"Officers attended and a cordon was put up while the package was analysed. It was established the item was not believed to be viable and there is no threat to the wider public.

"The item will be removed and enquiries are ongoing."
