Glasgow Chinese restaurant gives 'non-refundable' Christmas deposit to food bank sparking debate

A Chinese restaurant in Glasgow has caused a stir online for using a customer's £50 deposit on food bank supplies after they cancelled their Christmas reservation.

Wong's in Maryhill shared the decision on social media, sparking plenty of debate among Glaswegians.

The takeaway posted on Facebook: "One of our customers have cancelled their Christmas Day reservations. As we have mentioned before, deposits are non-refundable.

"They paid a £50 deposit, which we have used to buy some food for the food bank at Tesco."

Many consider the gesture an act of goodwill, although some of the 500 commenters below the post think otherwise.

One person supported the takeaway's decision, stating: "Personally if I booked and told it was non-refundable I'd be more than happy if I thought my deposit had gone to buy food for the food bank to help others."

Another agreed: "I think what you've done is amazing, you could have not said anything and kept the money, what a great gesture well done."

An angry commenter stated: "Should have refunded it back, plenty notice to get space filled, and obviously you didn't need it as you have spent it, think this has backfired on you. Cost of living is through the roof and they probably couldn't afford to eat out now, at least they gave you plenty notice."

Another said: "Deposit should have been returned, the business suffered no detriment with this much notice. Poor show."

Following the heated debate, Wong's took to social media to shed more light on the situation.

They said: "Due to the many bad comments on the recent post, we would like to diffuse a few misunderstandings.

"The only information we can disclose on social media is that there was a complication when a customer asked to cancel an Christmas booking. The customer in question was extremely aggressive and threatening during the incident, and refused to co-operate with our staff."

The Wong's owner told Glasgow Live: "He was really aggressive.

"If he told me nicely that they decided to cancel the booking, it would've been fine. But he was aggressive to us.

"The reason I made the post was because his attitude was really bad. I didn't want to advertise I wanted to let him know that I'm not taking your money into my pocket."
