Glasgow Central Station transformation needed to tackle passenger numbers

A masterplan to transform Glasgow Central Station has been recommended in a Scottish Government transport strategy.

It comes after Network Rail found there were capacity constraints at the station - highlighting that changes are needed to handle increasing passenger numbers.

It is the nation's busiest train station.

Central station is to be redeveloped as part of a masterplan for a number of railway hubs in Scotland according to a Transport Scotland strategic document.

The Strategic Transport Projects Review 2 report said “short term infrastructure improvements” will be taken forward at Glasgow Central.

The station will also see “longer term enhancements considered “as part of Clyde Metro proposals and future High Speed Two services to Londan and Birmingham.”

Work is already getting underway as part of proposals to improve the station.

Earlier this year Network Rail was granted planning permission to refurbish low level platforms 16 and 17 to replace flooring, wall and ceiling materials. It also got the go-ahead last year to refurbish shops and office space in the main concourse and Caledonian Chambers.

The Transport Scotland recommended Central Station masterplan proposal follows the upgrade to Glasgow Queen Street and improvements at Aberdeen and Stirling.

The major station masterplan is one of 45 recommendations in the technical report, published earlier in December, and incudes Edinburgh Waverley, Perth and Inverness.

The recommendations in the Strategic Transport Projects Review 2 report have been put forward to deliver national transport priorities.

Clyde Metro has also been confirmed by the Scottish Government as a priority for future transport investment.
