Glasgow bakery shares stark reality of running a business in cost of living crisis

A well-loved Glasgow bakery has shared a post about the reality of running an independent business during the cost of living crisis to update customers.

Deanston Bakery on 167 Deanston Drive shared a stark update to customers to be honest about how hard it is to keep a bakery running when fuel prices are skyrocketing. They explained how difficult business is at the moment and thanked customers for their support.

The community bakery in Shawlands put in a huge effort to fundraise for Ukraine when the war first broke out, raising over £70,000.

The family bakery explained the post was not looking for pity or help, they just felt it was necessary to highlight exactly what was going on.

The bakery wrote: "Being bakery just now is very difficult. This one isn't for pity or promotion, thought it's necessary to explain where we are at.

"It's common knowledge that prices are going up for everything, especially dairy, flour but the big one is electricity. There is no cap on rise for business .

"Electricity was always a significant bill as being bakery we use a lot of it ..ovens, mixers, fridges for all dough to prove, there is no end of it."

Adding: "We had overall price increase of 300% or in excess of 25k yearly overnight. Understandably we know customers facing same challenges at home and small price increases in shop were absorbed by lesser sales.

"Fully aware there is a very fine line there. We are doing our best to adjust to the situation. Thanks for every purchase - Yuriy and Lana."
