Glasgow Airport parking and hand luggage changes - everything you need to know

It's officially spring and people are already jetting off on their holidays to soak up some sun abroad.

From Portugal, Spain, France and Greece, there's endless options of places to travel to and escape our busy work lives.

However, before we get to the airport there's a few changes you will want to be aware of before you get there and find yourself in a pickle.

So whether you're heading abroad or down to London, here is what you need to know before heading to Glasgow Airport.

Glasgow Airport car park payment changes

The city's airport has warned that people should now avoid cash and instead only use contactless payments in their car parks.

The Short Stay car park will be completely cashless from the April 26 whilst the Pick Up and Drop Off will be completely cashless from the May 19.

Glasgow Airport drop off and pick up price increase

As reported by Glasgow Live back in February, Glasgow Airport has increased its drop-off fee from £4 to £5 and in addition to this, it has increased the narrow pick-up window from 10 to 15 minutes.

In the zone that allows guests to stay for up to 20 minutes has jumped to £10 and £15 for those waiting up to 30 minutes. Meanwhile those waiting between 30 minutes and an hour will now be charged £30.

Glasgow Airport hand luggage rules

If your airline allows it, you can take more than one item of hand baggage through security control at Glasgow Airport however you should check with your airline, as some operate additional limits.

Your airline may enforce restrictions on the size and number of cabin bags so it is best to check in with who you are flying with to find out other limits such as the size of your bag.

Banned items

According to Glasgow Airport, the following may not be carried in hand baggage.

Sharp items

This includes knives (with blades over 6cm), razor blades, box cutters, scissors (with blades over 6cm from fulcrim), axes, hatchets, cleavers, ice axes, ice picks, swords, sabres and sharp or pointed martial arts equipment.

Projectile-firing weapons

These include firearms, toy guns, replica/imitation guns, firearm parts (except telescopic sights), airguns, pellet guns, BB guns, flare guns, starting pistols, bows or crossbows, arrows, harpoon guns, spear guns, slingshots and catapults.

Stunning devices and incapacitating devices

Including stun guns, Tasers, animal killers, incapacitating chemicals, gases or sprays (eg Mace), pepper sprays, tear gas and animal repellent sprays.

Tools

This includes crowbars, drills and drill bits, saws, blowtorches, bolt guns, nail guns, or any tool with a blade or shaft over 6cm (eg screwdrivers or chisels).

Blunt instruments

This includes baseball/softball bats, clubs, batons, night sticks and martial arts equipment.

Explosive or incendiary substances

This includes ammunition, blasting caps, detonators and fuses, replica/imitation explosive devices, mines, grenades, pyrotechnics, smoke canisters, smoke cartridges, dynamite, gunpowder or plastic explosives.

Dangerous goods

These include flammable or harmful substances such as gases, oxidisers, poisons, corrosives and hazardous biological or chemical material. Non-safety matches, lighter fluid and firelighters are also included. The Civil Aviation Authority guide What Can I Carry?* contains full details.

They add: "Please note that this list only refers to the carriage of items on board the aircraft. With regards to liquids, you will still be restricted to 100ml when passing through security. A single cigarette lighter may be carried on your person.

"We may additionally prevent any item considered to pose a security or safety risk from passing through to the departure lounge. If you are in any doubt about a particular item of hand baggage, we recommend you to pack it in your hold baggage instead. Please see our checked baggage page for what can and can't be carried."

Liquids include

All drinks - including water
Liquid or semi-liquid foods, for example soup, jam, honey and syrups
Cosmetics and toiletries, including creams, lotions, oils, perfumes, mascara and lip gloss
Sprays, including shaving foam, hairspray and spray deodorants
Pastes, including toothpaste
Gels, including hair and shower gel
Contact lens solution
Any other solutions and items of similar consistency

If you do take liquids in your hand luggage

Containers must hold no more than 100ml
Containers must be in a single, transparent, resealable plastic bag, which holds no more than a litre and measures approximately 20cm x 20cm
Contents must fit comfortably inside the bag so it can be sealed
The bag must not be knotted or tied at the top
You’re limited to 1 plastic bag per person
You must show the bag at the airport security point

Liquids in containers larger than 100ml generally cannot go through security even if the container is only part full. There are some exemptions.

You can take liquid containers larger than 100ml through security if they:

You can also take liquids bought at an airport or on a plane (such as duty free) through security if:

The items are sealed inside a security bag when you buy them
The receipt for the items is sealed in the security bag and visible

You must not open the security bag until you reach your final destination. Airport staff may need to open the items to screen the liquid at the security point.

Glasgow Prestwick airport hand luggage rules

Glasgow's other airport states that passengers can only bring one small bag on board - unless you have purchase priority and two cabin bags.

They note that baggage allowances is determined by airlines and "will depend on factors such as fare paid, class, route, aircraft type, government regulations, and the airline’s own company, commercial and health and safety policies."

They add: "Travellers are advised to verify baggage allowances with the airline when booking their ticket to avoid confusion or complications at the airport."

In addition to this, they add that there are restrictions in place when it comes to what you can and cannot take on board.

What you cannot pack in your hand luggage

Sharp items, such as nail clippers, scissors, pocket knives and metal nail files
Liquids and gels over 100mls (liquids, aerosols, gels and lighters under 100mls can be carried on, limited to one clear plastic bag of no more than 20 x 20cm.)
Items that are classified as restricted or dangerous (restricted items can be packed in hold luggage)
