Saturday night in the 1990s was incomplete without switching on the TV to watch the incredible physical exploits of modern day Gladiators. Each of the regular stars had their own identity and following.
A packed audience would cheer on their heroes such as Jet, Ace, Warrior, Amazon, Hunter or Wolf as they competed against contestants vying to beat them in tough challenges such as Atlaspheres and Gauntlet. Now, with the Gladiators show set for a return to British television screens in the autumn on the BBC, ICE 36 sat down with Diane Youdale – AKA Jet – from the original series to look back at the iconic 90’s smash.
Diane, who was one of the most popular Gladiators from the original series, spoke about her experience on the show, being headhunted to appear as Jet and what it was like to slip into the iconic costume for the very first time. Diane, who grew up in Billingham, also revealed that Wolf was the biggest diva on the show and how arguments over pay caused tension behind-the-scenes on one of the biggest television shows of the era.
