Girl, 15, dies in Manchester hospital after van leaves slip road in horror smash

A teenage girl has died after a van left a major slip road before crashing into a metal barrier. Bonny Rae Barrow was rushed to Royal Manchester Children's Hospital after being left with serious injuries following the crash.

The 15-year-old was later transferred to Wythenshawe Hospital, where she tragically died. Officers were called out following the collision just after 7pm last Friday (July 7).

A Mercedes Sprinter van had left the carriageway of the A56 slip road which leads on to the A679 Burnley Road, in east Lancashire. The van crashed through a metal barrier and down a steep ravine below.

Bonny, who has been named by her family, was a passenger in the van. The driver, a 23-year-old man, suffered serious injuries including a number of fractures. He was taken to hospital and has since been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Lancashire Police says Bonny's family is being supported by specially trained officers while enquiries continue. Any witnesses, or people with mobile or dashcam footage, are being urged to come forward.

Sgt Phil Baxendale, of the Specialist Operations Road Policing Unit, said: “First and foremost my thoughts are with the loved ones of the young girl who has sadly lost her life. While we have made an arrest our investigation is ongoing and I would continue to appeal to anyone who either saw the collision itself, or the van beforehand, or who has any footage which could assist in our investigation, to get in touch.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Lancashire Police on 101, quoting log 1253 of July 7.
