A 10-year-old girl who lost part of her right foot in a vicious shark attack gloated from her hospital bed "I won" after scaring off the predator.
Jasmine Carney, from Florida, was at Hobe Sound Beach on Sunday afternoon with her nan when she went into the water for a swim, but soon noticed her foot was being grabbed.
She looked down and saw a grey-looking object attached to her leg as she immediately tried to wriggle away from the shark.
She told WPTV: “Something grabbed me. It looked pretty big and it was grey. It hurt, so I’m like 'kick it and run away'.”
After managing to free herself from the shark, she quickly ran down the beach to find her nan who was left in shock.
Stephanie Carney, her adoptive grandmother, said: “She came running up that beach, screaming ‘Nana! Nana! Something bit me.’ And I saw all the blood and I got the lifeguard."
Lifeguards put a tourniquet on her ankle to try and stem the bleeding coming from her foot.
Emergency services were contacted and a helicopter was arranged to take Jasmine to a nearby hospital for her injuries.
On arrival, medics were amazed at how calm Jasmine was as she took the traumatic ordeal in her stride.
Dr Nir Hus, who treated the young girl, said: "She was very positive from the get-go. There was a piece missing from her foot. Luckily for her, that was the only location she was bitten.”
Surgery was performed on her ankle, which had suffered deep tears and lacerations.
Doctors said Jasmine will make a full recovery within the next six months, as she recovers at home.
Jasmine has credited her little six-year-old brother for keeping her calm after the nasty shark attack.
She confessed: "He's pretty curious, so I might as well stay calm because I know he wouldn’t want me to be scared, because he’s the best little brother in the world."
The shark attack comes a few months after a grandmother was mauled in South Carolina - just moments after telling her grandson not to worry about the ocean predators.
Karren Sites, 55, from Pennsylvania, was on holiday with her husband at Myrtle Beach in August when her grandson was too scared to go in the water.
The grandmother decided to get into the sea to prove to her eight-year-old grandson that there weren't any sharks - but ended up being bitten.
She was admitted to hospital with damage to her ring finger and gaping wounds.
Doctors warned Mrs Sites that the nerve tendons in her arm may never recover following the attack.
