Giovanni van Bronckhorst makes Jon McLaughlin call ahead of Rangers Champions League clash with Ajax

Jon McLaughlin

GIOVANNI VAN BRONCKHORST will put his faith in Jon McLaughlin to bounce back from his Old Firm horror show when Rangers face Ajax in the Champions League.

The keeper endured a nightmare afternoon at Parkhead as Celtic ran out 4-0 winners to extend their lead in the Premiership title race to five points.

McLaughlin was questioned over the first three goals and had a moment to forget as his loose pass allowed David Turnbull to complete the scoring.

But the 34-year-old is set to keep his place between the sticks as Rangers begin their Group A campaign with a daunting trip to the Johan Cruijff Arena.

Van Bronckhorst said: “I’ve spoke with Jon and I’ve spoken with the team about how we played, the way we conceded goals and how we need to improve, what went wrong.

“It’s a normal process. You cannot change every time you gave a defeat. You cannot change everything because you have to stick to your beliefs and your way of playing.

“The execution we had on Saturday was below par - far below par. That’s what I want to see different.

“It’s the only reaction we have to show. Of course after a defeat you are very down. But it’s normal as a human being when you lose a game.

“But then again you have to look forward. You learn from the mistakes you have.

“As a player and a manager you want to go on the pitch the next day and be a better player for the next game. That’s the intention we have."
