Former Celtic star Mark Wilson admits he is unsure of Giorgos Giakoumakis' mindset behind the scenes - but has warned the frontman Ange Postecoglou won't tolerate players who want to leave.
Danish side Midtjylland have already made an approach to the Giakomakis camp in a bid to lure the towering Greek frontman from the Scottish Premiership leaders to the Superliga this month, with contract talks between Celtic and the striker stalling. The Danes are looking to land the Greece international for around £5million while the Celtic Park powerbrokers are looking to make a decent profit on the £2.5million they paid VVV Venlo back in the summer of 2021.
Former Parkhead defender Wilson admits he has major question marks over the Giakoumakis and the "atmosphere" he is creating behind the scenes at Parkhead and Lennoxtown. However, he reckons Postecoglou will have him quickly move on if the 28-year-old is not willing to play his part.
Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, Wilson addressed a caller who was keen for Giakoumakis to remain at the club: "I think the majority of Celtic fans would be the same. You just wonder what the atmosphere is like behind the scenes.
'We never get that kind of information. We only get drip fed wee bits and pieces, but what does Giakoumakis think of his time at Celtic? Is he as upset as some people think because he is not getting a new deal, or is he happy?
"I think the majority of Celtic fans would hope that he is happy and hope that he is willing to fight Kyogo for his place. They will hope he is there beyond the end of January.
"We have touched on what he said (Ange Postecoglou) at the AGM, about being aggressive in the transfer market and moving things on. I guess Giakoumakis would be your first real example of that.
"When you things drip fed and then you hear about Midtjylland, and £6million; those things seem to grow legs. I think he could find his way out of Celtic Park.
"I would hate to see him go because I think he brings something different to this Celtic side. But if the manager thinks he wants to go Ange Postecoglou is not the type of manager who would hang about.
"He would get him gone, he would get a good price., and he would look elsewhere. I don't think the Celtic backroom team will be sitting thinking 'what are we going to do if Giakoumakis leaves?' - they will have targets."
