Gio van Bronckhorst's post Rangers 'lifeline' after Utrecht boss is sacked for attacking own player

Giovanni van Bronckhorst is on the shortlist for a quickfire return to management at FC Utrecht after they sacked their manager for attacking one of his own players.

The former Rangers boss was axed last month after a disappointing start to the season where they trailed Celtic in the league and had a calamitous Champions League campaign - where they became the worst team ever to play in the competition's group stage. Successor Michael Beale had his first game in charge this week in a 3-2 win over Hibs, whilst van Bronckhorst is still without a club.

But he's been named on a shortlist to take charge at Utrecht, who are currently in seventh place in the Dutch Eredivisie, after they sacked Henk Fraser following a bust-up with striker Amin Younes - when he reportedly grabbed him by the throat during a training camp. Dutch TV pundit Jan Joost van Gangelen said: "Giovanni van Bronckhorst is on the list.

"Of course, he was fired recently by Rangers, but Vitesse Arnhem has turned out to be a kind of lifeline for Phillip Cocu and Utrecht can also be a lifeline for a big name like him too."

Utrecht confirmed they had binned Fraser after the unsavoury incident this week. They stated: "Henk Fraser is no longer manager at FC Utrecht. An incident on the training pitch in Utrecht in which Fraser showed transgressive behaviour, is the reason for this."

Fraser admitted he had to go. He said: "This has never happened to me as a coach. It doesn't suit me and it doesn't suit the club. I have damaged the club with this and that hurts many people, including me."

Van Bronckhorst is reportedly up against former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam, who was last in charge at FC Cincinnati, for the job,
