Former Celtic midfielder Alan Thompson believes Rangers shouldn't "pull the plug" on Giovanni van Bronckhorst - unless their Old Form rivals win the league by 15 or 20 points.
Van Bronckhorst has come under significant pressure from Gers fans in recent months as his side's underwhelming start to domestic competitions has been coupled with being crowned as "the worst Champions League team ever". Rangers currently trail Celtic by four points in the Scottish Premiership title race but their league form has faltered recently while Ange Postecoglou's men can't stop scoring.
Thompson knows what it takes to be successful in Glasgow. The former midfielder bagged several high-profile goals during Celtic's run to the UEFA Cup final in 2003. And he believes Van Bronckhorst should be spared unless his old team rack up an embarrassing gap in the title race.
The 48-year-old told Grosvenor Sport : "A lot of the players at Rangers right now are still Steven Gerrard's players so I think Giovanni will want time to build his own team and put his own stamp on things.
"I don't think Rangers will press any buttons on anything unless Celtic go and romp the league by 15 or 20 points, that's when the pressure might come but if the title rice comes to the last two or three games of the season then who knows, Rangers could go on and win the title. If they can at least push Celtic and make it a good title race then he'll definitely be there next season."
