Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida has passed away at the age of 95.

The star achieved international film stardom during the 1950s and was dubbed "the most beautiful woman in the world" after the title of one her movies.

She died in Rome on Monday, as confirmed by her agent.

Gina was one of the most prominent international actors from the Golden Age of Hollywood cinema era and in her later years she focused on her passions in politics and photography, as reported by The Mirror.

Born Luigia Lollobrigida in Subiaco, she took part in several beauty contests before going on to appear in minor roles in Italian cinema. It was 1947 when her big break came, and she entered the Miss Italia pageant. Gina came third place in the contest, which changed her life and brought her fame and exposure on a national level.

Gina starred alongside big names including Frank Sinatra, Rock Hudson and Errol Flynn throughout her lengthy career, and she was known for roles in movies such as Beat the Devil with Humphrey Bogart - which catapulted her to international stardom - Soloman, Mrs Campbell and Bread, Love and Dreams, which won her a Bafta.

The star's agent, Paola Comin, didn't provide details on a cause of death at this time.

But the late actress had surgery in September to repair a thigh bone broken in a fall. She returned home and said she had quickly resumed walking.
