Gillian Anderson urges X-Files fans to "have an open mind" over Ryan Coogler's upcoming reboot, as she shares reaction to first episode's script

The X-Files star Gillian Anderson has shared her verdict on Ryan Coogler's upcoming reboot – and it's safe to say, we're now more excited than ever to see what the Sinners director has in store.

"We've had a few conversations. He's such a cool guy and so talented, and the pilot script is really good," the actor, who famously played FBI Agent Dana Scully, revealed at Washington DC's Awesome Con. "So, I would say, 'Have an open mind and give it a chance because it's gonna be f***ing cool.' It really is.

"It's something different. It's different and it's special," Anderson added in the clip shared by host Dory Jackson. We've got goosebumps already.

Having premiered in 1993, the original X-Files saw Anderson's no-nonsense Scully forced to team up with eccentric conspiracy theorist Fox Mulder (David Duchovny), as they're relegated to the headquarters' basement and tasked with investigating a bunch of unsolved, paranormal-seeming cases.

It initially ran for nine seasons, before releasing a 10th chapter in early 2016. After that proved to be a hit, it returned for an 11th batch of episodes in 2018. In addition to the TV shows, there have been two feature films: The X-Files, which came out in 1998, and The X-Files: I Want To Believe in 2008.

As it stands, little is known about Coogler's iteration, though it has been confirmed that it'll stream on Hulu, the source material's showrunner Chris Carter is executive producing, and that Danielle Deadwyler (Till, The Woman in the Yard) will play one of the new Bureau-employed leads.

While we wait for more news on the reboot, check out our guide to the best new TV shows still to come in 2026.
