Manhattan architect Rex Heuermann, who lived a secret life as the Gilgo Beach serial killer, has been held in a segregated cell since his arrest in July 2023. He has spent his time reading crime novels and receiving occasional visits from his lawyers or family, according to the sheriff who oversees the jail.
Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon revealed Heuermann also struck up a brief correspondence with Keith Hunter Jesperson, the infamous "Happy Face Killer" who confessed to killing eight women across the country in the 1990s. Jesperson, serving multiple life sentences without parole in Oregon, initiated the contact by writing to Heuermann at the Riverhead, New York jail. Heuermann wrote back once but has not responded to several follow-up letters from Jesperson, Toulon told The Associated Press ahead of Heuermann’s sentencing on Wednesday.
