Veteran Israeli politician Gideon Sa’ar has announced that he will not be taking on the role of defense minister, despite speculation that he could potentially replace the current minister Yoav Gallant. Sa’ar made this decision in consideration of the security situation along the border with Lebanon, as stated in a release on Saturday.
While Sa’ar acknowledged that he possesses the necessary qualifications for the position, emphasizing the importance of deep knowledge in security and diplomatic affairs, as well as experience in government, he ultimately opted out of the role. He highlighted his extensive experience in these areas, asserting his understanding of the demands of the position.
In a notable statement, Sa’ar expressed his belief that the defense minister should not necessarily come from the defense establishment. He argued that some of Israel’s most significant military and strategic setbacks have occurred under the leadership of individuals with military backgrounds. This perspective sheds light on his decision to decline the potential appointment.
The decision by Sa’ar comes amidst rumors that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was considering replacing Gallant, a retired major general with a long-standing career in the Israel Defense Forces, with Sa’ar, who has a distinguished career in politics.
