Trump-backed Gibbs ousts Meijer in Michigan GOP race for Congress

John Gibbs Peter Meijer Donald Trump Mich Michigan Joe Biden Grand Rapids Dave Wasserman Hillary Scholten 3rd Congressional District

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — John Gibbs, the Trump-endorsed challenger to U.S. Rep. Peter Meijer, was victorious in the nationally watched race of west Michigan's 3rd Congressional District.

A political appointee in former President Donald Trump's Housing and Urban Development agency, Gibbs pitched himself as an ultra-conservative replacement for incumbent Meijer of Grand Rapids Township, who was one of 10 House Republicans to impeach then-President Donald Trump after the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot.

Gibbs declared victory early Wednesday morning at a watch party at his campaign headquarters in Wyoming, a suburb of Grand Rapids.
