Tommy DeVito… Fantasy football hero?
Believe it. The New York Giants’ undrafted rookie quarterback has played his way into many a fantasy football conversation these days, something no one in their right mind ever thought would materialize at the beginning of the season.
But, with all of the injuries around the league at the quarterback position, there isn’t a whole lot to choose from out on waiver wires and depth at quarterback has become nearly non-existent.
Enter DeVito, who has been putting up some decent numbers despite being overwhelmed at times. Over the last three weeks, DeVito has been ranked the No. 11 quarterback in standard-scoring fantasy leagues.
DeVito’s ascending profile is becoming one of the biggest stories in the fantasy realm these days. The Giants will be without Daniel Jones for the rest of the season and Tyrod Taylor is still on IR, so DeVito is the clear No. 1 for the foreseeable future.
“I’m sure I’m going to hear about it, because I’ve seen it,” DeVito said about his sudden stardom. “My job is to come in here and play football to the highest my ability and help put my team in situations to win and be successful. So that’s my mindset every week going into it. That’s the team’s mindset going into it every week. That’s what we try to do every single week.”
The reality is, the Giants have underperformed offensively all year. Many believe that is about to change as DeVito gets more comfortable and acclimated under center.
“He did a good job of picking up our offense,” head coach Brian Daboll said of DeVito on Monday. “I think he operates well in the pocket, he’s got quick feet, he throws with anticipation and timing and he’s instinctive. He does a good job of seeing defenders and feeling defenses. I don’t think he’s an overprocessor, an overthinker.
“He can make a variety of the throws and he was a good young player to try to work with and develop and hopefully that we spend a year with him and he gets a little bit better so that maybe he can have something the following year, but things have sped up for him. I know he’s had this opportunity and look, there’s plenty of things that he knows he needs to work on, and we need to work on with him that we can help him, but he’s got the right mindset, the right approach. He’s done a good job since he’s been here.”
Now, if DeVito can cut down on the sacks (he’s been sacked a league-high 20 times in the past three weeks) and make some quicker decisions, he will etch himself further into the Giants’ future plans.
But for now, consider him a solid waiver wire fantasy pickup going down the stretch.
