The New York Giants came into Week 2 feeding off the dramatic Week 1 victory against the Tennessee Titans as they started their home campaign against the Carolina Panthers.
The Giants benefitted from two takeaways on the Panthers’ first two drives but were only able to come away with six points from those takeaways, and that was all they would get the entire half.
Both teams struggled to get anything going offensively and the one big play the Giants put together was called back because of a very questionable pick play that was called back for pass interference.
In the second half, both teams got the scoring going, exchanging blows back and forth. With 3:34 left, kicker Graham Gano nailed a 56-yard field goal to give the Giants a 19-16 lead.
The defense would come up with a big stop and get the ball back for the Big Blue offense. The Giants would ice the game from there on the legs on running back Saquon Barkley and quarterback Daniel Jones.
It wasn’t a pretty game by any stretch of the imagination, but at the end of the day Jones, Barkley and the Giants’ defense made big plays when it mattered most to help New York improve to 2-0.
Here’s how Twitter reacted.
Horrific call against the #Giants there for offensive performance on Sills. It was OBVIOUSLY not intentional for Sills. Natural pick. It was so quite clearly unintentional — just took 47 yards off the board AND moved them back 10 into a 2nd and impossible. Brutal. #TogetherBlue

Leonard Williams ruled out with a knee injury. That is not good.
Giants already without top two pass rushers in Kayvon Thibodeaux and Azeez Ojulari.
— Jordan Raanan (@JordanRaanan) September 18, 2022
Really hope this Leonard Williams injury isn’t a serious one because the #Giants simply don’t have the personnel to make it up. He’s their highest paid player and maybe their most irreplaceable. He helps them win the trench battle. Without him that will become an issue.

#Giants fans at MetLife Stadium are chanting “We Want Tyrod”.

Just saw Kadarius Toney head into the Giants' locker room.

Oshane Ximines balling for the Giants. Things I never expected Tweeting coming into this season.

Panthers have hit Daniel Jones nine times and have three sacks through 3 quarters.

Graham Gano's 52-yard field goal is good with 12:31 left.
Giants 16, Panthers 13.

gano should be the highest paid player on the team.

Christian McCaffrey just ripped off a 49-yarder and the Panthers are in business.
— Art Stapleton (@art_stapleton) September 18, 2022
Big stand by Giants defense. Oshane Ximines pressures Baker Mayfield into throwing the ball away.
Eddy Pineiro knocks the FG through and we're tied again: 16-16 with 10:46 left.

Graham Gano is a beast. Hits a 56-yarder to give the Giants a 19-16 lead with 3:34 remaining.
He's once again their best player.
— Jordan Raanan (@JordanRaanan) September 18, 2022
Wink bringing in blitzes, unblocked rusher causes Baker to break containment. Then there’s also another guy designated to chase after the QB when he breaks containment. Awesome stuff from Wink that prevents improvised QB plays.

Daniel Jones drops back on 3rd and 6, then turns it up field and runs for the first down and the Giants are about to be 2-0.

Giants – Panthers is a good example about how important coaching is. The Giants GM basically said before the first game “don’t hold our record against us if we are bad. The roster isn’t good”. They are 2-0.
Panthers meanwhile continue to sink. Rhule now 10-25— Geoff Schwartz (@geoffschwartz) September 18, 2022
Incredible effort by Wink Martindale and an undermanned defense. Pair of Graham Gano fourth-quarter 50+ field goals and the Giants are 2-0.

Giants win over Panthers thoughts!
•Wink Martindale is a beast, won the game
•Saquon Barkley was gritty today v. stacked boxes
•Daniel Jones had ONE good drive. That’s it
•Kenny Golladay had 2 plays, kinda crazy

MetLife Stadium was as loud as I've ever heard it on that third down, which ends with a Baker Mayfield throwaway. Wink got what he wanted. #Giants
