Giants select QB in Sports Illustrated’s way-too-early 2025 mock draft

As the start of the 2024 season inches closer, expectations surrounding the New York Giants are understandably low.

Because of those low expectations — however silly this may seem in August — it’s already got many looking ahead to the 2025 NFL draft, where they are once again projected to pick in the top 10.

In Sports Illustrated’s way-too-early 2025 mock draft, they have the Giants selecting eighth overall and going with quarterback Shedeur Sanders out of Colorado.

8. New York Giants: Shedeur Sanders, QB, Colorado

Sanders tossed 27 touchdowns and only three interceptions in 2023.

The Giants part with Daniel Jones after six rocky seasons and make Sanders the new face of the franchise. Sanders can get hot in a hurry and is capable of leading teams in crunch time. But his gunslinger mentality often got him in trouble last season as the starter for his father and coach Deion Sanders. If Sanders plays more composed, he has a high ceiling as a pocket passer and would do well in this scenario because the Giants used their 2024 first-round pick on wide receiver Malik Nabers.

It’s no secret that skepticism surrounds Daniel Jones entering the season. The script has flipped on DJ from the time he signed his lucrative contract until now after appearing in just six games last season.

But the offense is going to look different this year with the departure of Saquon Barkley, a revamped offside line, and the addition of a bonafide No. 1 receiver in rookie Malik Nabers.

The Giants most certainly did their due diligence in this past year’s draft and would most certainly do that again, depending on how high they will be picking.  In this particular scenario, the Giants’ selection of Sanders would be the third quarterback off the board at No. 8.

However, with the season right around the corner, the Giants are focused on winning games in 2024 rather than what their plan is in the 2025 NFL draft. Although the expectations are not high ahead of the season, the Giants hope to prove everyone wrong, just as they did two years ago.
