Giants make calls, ultimately stand pat at trade deadline

The 2022 NFL trade deadline has come and gone, and the 6-2 New York Giants turned out to be sellers.\

The Giants and general manager Joe Schoen made no moves on Tuesday but did make several calls on wide receivers. They reached out to the Denver Broncos about Jerry Jeudy, the Pittsburgh Steelers about Chase Claypool and the Houston Texans about Brandin Cooks.

“We had several conversations with teams on multiple positions, but the price point didn’t match up. Thing just didn’t work out,” general manager Joe Schoen told reporters. “We were active with phone calls and trying to improve our roster, which we’ll continue to do.”

Jeudy and Cooks stayed put, while Claypool was dealt to the Chicago Bears in exchange for a second-round pick.

Cooks seemed frustrated over not being moved.

Meanwhile, the only involvement the Giants had at the trade was sending Kadarius Toney to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a pair of draft picks.

Kenny Golladay and his bloated contract remain with the team.

Schoen ultimately decided that the price for wide receivers was too high and he didn’t want to risk future draft capital or future salary cap. That decision leaves the Giants with nine picks in the 2023 NFL draft with the potential for two more to be added via the compensatory system.

The Giants’ nine picks are as follows:

  • 1st
  • 2nd
  • 3rd
  • 3rd (compensatory, Chiefs)
  • 4th
  • 5th
  • 6th (Chiefs)
  • 7th
  • 7th (Baltimore Ravens)

The Giants expect Golladay back after the bye week. He will be added to a group that currently consists of Wan’Dale Robinson, Darius Slayton, Marcus Johnson and David Sills.
