The New York Giants beefed up their tight room this past offseason, trading for Pro Bowler Darren Waller and signing former Buffalo Bill Tommy Sweeney.
That is on top of bringing back last year’s two budding stars, rookie Daniel Bellinger and free agent Lawrence Cager.
Cager, a 6-foot-5, 250-pounder who played his college ball at Miami and Georgia before being signed by the New York Jets as a UDFA in 2020, was inked by the Giants to their practice squad last season. He also previously spent time with the Cleveland Browns.
Last year, Cager played in six regular season games for the Giants, catching nine passes for 118 yards and a touchdown.
This season, with all the additions, Cager might find himself on the roster bubble in camp. It won’t be from a lack of talent as he showed the Giants that he could be a factor in the offense.
In a recent interview with New York Daily News beat writer Pat Leonard, Cager spoke about modeling himself after Waller, who is of similar dimensions and style.
“I feel like I can be a starter in this league,” Cager said. “That takes experience. Being behind a guy like Darren Waller, who just came over here, going under his shoulders and being under his wing, following him everywhere, doing what he’s doing and soaking up game from him, that’s going to take my game to the next level so I can help this team in the future.”
Cager is confident that he is in the right spot and with the right team. The tight end room is suddenly ripe with talent. Bellinger has not been sitting around idly either this offseason. He came to the offseason workouts visibly more muscular than last year.
That gives the Giants a solid four-man unit that has a little bit of everything. All four can block and make plays in the passing game. Waller will be the featured player to start, but he has gone through a recent spate of injuries that could leave the door open for a player like Cager to be called upon.
He’ll be ready.
