Giants hire Aaron Wellman: 4 things to know

The New York Giants hired Aaron Wellman as their new executive director of player performance on Tuesday.

Wellman replaces Craig Fitzgerald, who was the Giants’ director of strength and performance the past two seasons under head coach Brian Daboll. Fitzgerald recently accepted the same position at the University of Florida.

Here are four quick things to know about Wellman

Second time around with the Giants

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

This is Wellman’s second stint with Big Blue.

He was the Giants’ strength and conditioning coach under head coaches Ben McAdoo and Pat Shurmur (2016-19), responsible for “the yearly programming of strength, speed, and position-specific conditioning for the Giants.”

During his tenure here, Wellman “implemented individualized performance programs to maximize speed, strength, and power while mitigating the risk of injury.”

Wellman spent the last four seasons as Indiana University’s “senior assistant athletic director for football performance.”

At Indiana, Wellman worked with current Giants linebacker Micah McFadden, a Giants’ fifth-round pick in 2022 and current starter.

Wellman played football at Manchester University in Indiana, where he earned his degree in exercise science in 1996.

He also earned master’s degrees from Indiana in applied sport science in 1998 and nutrition science in 2009, and a PhD from Bond University in Queensland, Australia in 2018.

A solid resume

Prior to joining the Giants for the first time, Wellman led strength and conditioning programs at several major college programs such as Ball State University (2004-08), San Diego State University (2009-10), and the University of Michigan (2011-14).

He began his professional career at Indiana, first as a graduate assistant (1997) and then as the Hoosiers’ assistant strength and conditioning coach (1998-2001).

Wellman was an assistant at Michigan State University (2001-03) before going to Ball State.
