Few would doubt the quality of Gianluigi Buffon.
A legend of the game, the former Juventus goalkeeper lifted the World Cup in 2006, the highlight of a career to have seen him win eleven League titles across two of Europe’s leading five decisions.
Still going at 44 after moving to boyhood club Parma in 2021, Buffon unfortunately made one of the biggest mistakes in his storied career.
During a Serie B game against Perugia, Buffon came racing off of his line in the seventh minute of the game, looking to keep the ball moving following teammate Jayden Oosterwolde’s back-pass.
Buffon, however, completely missed the ball as it arrived at his feet, kicking only the air and allowing forward Marco Olivieri to react.
The Perugia star chased the loose ball down, looking - perhaps understandably - much quicker than his opponent as Buffon desperately tried to atone for his error.
#Buffon has just had an absolute nightmare for Parma in Serie B 😱

It may just be the worst mistake of his whole career!pic.twitter.com/owteudIgDI
As you can see above, that was in vein and Olivieri - 20 years younger than Buffon - would tap into an empty net.
