Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis has explained what Celtic fans make him 'always remember' as he revealed he has given up his flash car obsession.
Ange Postecoglou snapped up the striker last summer as part of his first major rebuild in a reported £2.5million transfer from VVV Venlo after finishing as Eredivisie top scorer. The hitman - who took a little time to settle - repeated the feat in Scotland as he topped the scoring charts once again as the Hoops recaptured the Premiership title from Rangers and lifted the Premier Sports Cup. That league triumph secured automatic entry to the Champions League with the Scottish champions set to mix it with Europe's elite.
The Greece international is set to play another starring role this season as Celtic juggle domestic matters with European football once again as they bid to land further silverware and retain their league crown. The Hoops are two for two so far in the Premiership with wins over Aberdeen and Kilmarnock. Giakoumakis admits he feels 'really important' at the Glasgow giants and says the fans play a major role in making him realise that week in, week out.
He told the Celtic View Podcast: “It doesn’t change my mind about football. They change your decisions about your life, how you spend your money, different things that make you more mature.
“You are forced to be! No more flash cars? To be honest, that is a passion of mine and I can’t hold it back! I had some cars. At the same time I was doing my investments, so I was trying to keep a balance. The main reason I can keep a balance is my wife – she says, ‘don’t do this, don’t do that!’”
“It feels different to last summer. I am really important for this club and the fans make me realise it every week.
“It’s something I always appreciate and will always love – and always remember. That’s one of the reasons I will try to do my best on the field for this club. I want to score some goals as I already miss celebrating with them.”
