Giakoumakis details 'extra motivation' behind Atlanta transfer from Celtic and 'Tank' nickname

Giorgos Giakoumakis has detailed the 'extra motivation' that made him decide on a move to Atlanta Untied as he reveals the reason he LOVES to be called 'Tank'.

The Greek striker officially left Celtic last night to make the move to the MLS after just 18 months in Glasgow. Ange Postecoglou brought him to the Scottish champions from VVV-Venlo but after a short stint at Parkhead, he has made the move to the States. During his time at the Hoops he lifted the Premiership title and won a League Cup. He also experienced Champions League football and a taste of the Old Firm derby with Rangers.

Celtic are well known for their huge fanbase and loud support, something Giakoumakis has noted in his new club as a reason for joining while the training facilities and stadium are two other key factors in deciding to make the switch. The 28-year-old took part in a 17 questions club interview to allow fans to get to know him better. On the move, he said: "First of all, I watched a lot MLS the last two or three years, and of course it was one of the leagues that I would love to play in. Atlanta because I know Atlanta is a very, very good, very nice club.

"It’s a big club with a lot of fans, which is something that I really like because I'm a passionate person and I love to play in front of crazy fans, which Atlanta has.

"I watched all of Atlanta United’s games from last season. It helped me a lot to make up my mind and sign with Atlanta. And I researched about the training facilities and the stadium and they’re just amazing. It was an extra motivation to join Atlanta."

When asked about any nicknames, he commented: "I love to be called “Yako.” It’s from my surname. “Tank” is one of the better ones that I really love. That comes from my size and my strength."

On his playing style and season aims, he added: "I'm a proper nine. I try to get into the box. I can score and that’s something that I’ve worked a lot on the last two to three years. My best abilities are my strength, my movement, my ability to score. And I think that I'm also mentally strong.

"I never mention any number [goals] because you never know... but I can tell you one thing, if I don’t score in a game, I’m not happy."
